Craving sushi but intimidated by the thought of making it at home? Fear not! Making sushi rolls is surprisingly easy and a fun activity for everyone. With a few simple steps and fresh ingredients, you can create delicious and impressive sushi rolls right in your own kitchen.

SUSHI ROLL

INGREDIENTS

SUSHI RICE

  • 1 cup sushi rice
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

ROLL INGREDIENTS

4 sheets nori (seaweed)

FILLINGS (choose your favorites)

  • 1/2 cucumber, julienned
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 4 imitation crab sticks, cut in half lengthwise
  • 4 cooked shrimp, halved lengthwise
  • 1 carrot, julienned

EQUIPMENT

  • Sushi rolling mat (makisu)
  • Bowl of water (for wetting hands)

INSTRUCTIONS

RICE PREPARATION

  • 1. Rinse sushi rice in a fine-mesh sieve until water runs clear.
  • 2. Combine rinsed rice and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes, or until water is absorbed.
  • 3. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, for 10 minutes.
  • 4. While rice is cooking, in a small saucepan, combine rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat gently until sugar and salt are dissolved. Do not boil.
  • 5. Transfer cooked rice to a large bowl. Gently drizzle the vinegar mixture over the rice and fold to combine, being careful not to mash the rice. Let rice cool slightly until it’s comfortable to handle.

ROLLING THE SUSHI

  • 6. Place a sheet of nori on a sushi rolling mat, shiny side down.
  • 7. Wet your hands with water to prevent rice from sticking. Take a handful of rice and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving about 1 inch of nori uncovered at the far edge.
  • 8. Arrange your chosen fillings horizontally across the rice, about 1 inch from the edge closest to you.
  • 9. Using the rolling mat, lift the edge of the mat closest to you and begin rolling tightly, tucking in the fillings as you go. Continue rolling until the nori edges meet. Press firmly to seal the roll.
  • 10. Place the sushi roll on a cutting board and, using a sharp, wet knife, slice the roll into 6-8 pieces. Wet the knife between cuts to prevent sticking.
  • 11. Repeat steps 6-10 with remaining nori, rice, and fillings.

Now you can impress your friends and family with your homemade sushi rolls! Get creative with different fillings to find your favorite combinations. Serve your sushi with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger for a complete sushi experience. Happy rolling!
